Growing up in a home full of Guatemalan textiles collected by her parents, Michigan native Amira Marion developed her own love for the nation's fabrics. In 2014, she founded her Brooklyn-based home textile collection, Archive New York, as a way to reinterpret traditional Guatemalan motifs and weaving methods. Her team begins its design process by hunting down antique and increasingly rare fabric samples, illustrations, and photos of beautiful handwoven textiles and then reconnecting with the original artisan group associated with each design. By providing multiple nonprofits and artisans with fair-trade employment, Archive New York is working toward a greater goal of ethical and sustainable products, and by carefully preserving each original textile and pattern, the brand also strives to honor the integrity of Mayan culture and heritage. This textile was woven by an artisan from the lakeside village of Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala, using a back-strap loom, a time-honored method of weaving. The traditional pattern, made in partnership with a nonprofit organization on Lake Atitlan, represents Santiago Atitlan’s woven stripe.
